In May 2005, a group of teenage settler girls attacked the students and teachers at Qurtaba School, blocking their way out of the school as a police officer filmed and soldiers watched.
The settlers sing and chant in Hebrew, "There is no Palestine, this is Israel" and "there are no Palestinians." Settler boys in the street then blocked the stairs by stoning the students as they tried to come down the stairs. The students scream and run, but are blocked from every direction. Though the Israeli police and soldiers were on the scene, they did nothing to prevent injuries despite constant pleading for help from the internationals. Documentarian Terje Carlsson filmed this incident.
But... but... Israel is the most tolerant place on the planet! That's what all the zionists tell me on newsvine, it's not like they live in a fantasy land where God's chosen people live in the land God gave them happily living with the Muslims there.
But... but... Israel is the most tolerant place on the planet!
Israel has many strands to its population just like any other nation. The settlers contain elements who are among the the most extreme in regarding the whole of Israel as divinely promised to the Jews (in line with the Torah and for that matter the Qu'ran) and therefore most resentful of arab claims. Their behaviour described here is though inexcusable and contrary to the spirit of Judaism.
As for Israeli tolerance it has to be viewed in the context of the circumstances. I doubt many nations on earth would find themselves faced with decades of violent campaign aimed at their destruction and behave any better. I rather suspect most would have fared considerably worse - judging by how rapidly US and UK forces found themselves in hot water for their conduct in Iraq and suchlike.
This incident reflects very badly, but does not begin to compare to the violent and murderous actions taken by Palestinians for many years in pursuit of their political aims.
There are extremists everywhere.
